What The Last Stand: Dead Zone is
The Last Stand: Dead Zone is a zombie survival game that combines two things. Between missions you run a compound in Union City: you build and upgrade buildings, keep your survivors fed and watered, and gather resources. Then you pick a place on the city map, send in a team of one to five survivors and play the mission in real time. You move them with clicks, they shoot the infected on their own, you search containers for loot, and you lead everyone to the exit zones before the 7-minute clock runs out.
The progression is long. Besides your leader you can recruit up to nine more survivors and give each of them one of five roles: Fighter, Recon, Engineer, Scavenger or Medic. The map has 41 neighbourhoods and 47 types of zone, and you can level up to level 60. Missions are played in a 3D view with a camera you can rotate, so the game feels closer to a tactical squad game than to an open-world shooter.
What the original was and why you could not play it any more
The original The Last Stand: Dead Zone was a Flash game that depended on an online server. Its servers closed, and without them the game had nothing to connect to: your compound, your survivors and your account lived on a server that is no longer running.
A second obstacle arrived separately. Adobe ended support for Flash at the end of 2020 and browsers stopped running it, so even a saved copy of the old game no longer opens in a current browser. Playing it again takes two things: a server that does the job of the old one and a client that opens without Flash. This edition provides both.
How you play it today
Go to deadzone.fbgamesweb.com and register with a username of 3 to 20 characters (letters, numbers, underscores or hyphens) and a password of at least 8 characters. No email address is asked for and there is no sign-in through any other service. The account is required: it stores your compound, your survivors and your progress, so you can carry on from another computer by logging in. Only one session per account can be open at a time.
A guided tutorial of 34 steps starts you off. You build a Workbench, set up food and water storage, welcome your first survivor, give them a role and go on a guided scavenging run to a corner store in Riverside North, the first neighbourhood of the city. Playing costs nothing, and donations are voluntary and optional: nobody has to donate to play.
What is different from the original
This is an independent edition, not a copy of the old service. It runs on an FB Games server with its own accounts, so accounts and progress from the original cannot be imported or recovered. It is a beta: the service is offered as it is, it can be interrupted, and progress may be reset if serious bugs have to be fixed.
The server follows the rules stored in the game's data files, such as buildings, items, zones and levels. The parts those files do not describe, for example exactly what a container holds or how injuries are drawn, had to be reconstructed, so the game may not match the original in every detail. If you read a figure about the old game somewhere else, do not take it for granted here.
Some things are not in yet. There are no alliances and no fights between players, there is no trading between players, and your compound is not raided on a schedule: the danger is on the missions. What you do have from the start is chat with other players, a neighbours list you can visit to help speed up a construction, and from level 15 the Terror Dome arena with a weekly ranking.
The game is in English
The game itself exists only in English, and the language cannot be switched. The names in our guides for buildings, weapons, roles and neighbourhoods are exactly what you will see on screen. The site's home page and its short guide are available in English and Spanish.
Other games with a similar name
Several other games share part of this name: a series called The Last Stand, one called The Last Stand: Union City, other titles called simply Dead Zone from other studios, and phone apps with similar names. They are separate games with their own rules, accounts and support. We do not judge them and we do not claim any relationship with them. This page and the ones linked below are only about the browser edition of The Last Stand: Dead Zone from FB Games.
If you arrived here after searching the name and ended up on a page offering an installer or a Flash Player update, you are in the wrong place for that: this edition has nothing to install.
