Games like The Last Stand: Dead Zone: zombie survival and base management, compared by type

If you are looking for games like The Last Stand: Dead Zone, start from what you liked about it. Dead Zone mixes managing a survivor compound with real-time scavenging missions against the infected, and it runs free in a browser. Other games share one part of that mix: zombie survival, community and base management, or real-time strategy against hordes. This page compares them by type, using only broad labels, and then shows where Dead Zone fits so you can decide whether to try it.

What kind of game Dead Zone is

The Last Stand: Dead Zone has two layers. In the first you manage a compound in Union City: you build and upgrade dozens of types of buildings, keep survivors fed and watered, and watch comfort, security and morale. In the second you pick a place on the city map and play a mission in real time with a team of one to five survivors, searching containers for loot, fighting the infected and reaching the exit before a 7-minute clock runs out.

Survivors have roles, gear and levels, loot comes from containers, the view is 3D with a camera you can rotate, and you level up to level 60. It is not an open-world game and it is not a first-person shooter, which matters when you compare it with the games below.

Zombie survival with a community to manage

If what you liked was the base and the people in it, look at games in the style of State of Decay, a zombie survival game built around managing a community and its base. It shares with Dead Zone the loop of looking after survivors, going out to find supplies and coming back to improve the shelter.

In Dead Zone that loop is slower and menu-driven. You assign roles, wait for constructions and heal injuries over hours or days, and then you go out in short, timed missions.

Open-world survival from an isometric view

Project Zomboid is a zombie survival game with an isometric view and an open world. It shares the survival theme and the raised camera with Dead Zone, but it is a different experience: you roam freely, while in Dead Zone you command a team through self-contained mission scenes.

Choose it if you want to explore and improvise in a large map. Choose Dead Zone if you prefer a structured progression with a tutorial, defined neighbourhoods and clear mission objectives.

Real-time strategy against zombie hordes

They Are Billions is a real-time strategy game with zombie hordes. It has in common with Dead Zone real time, zombies and the management of resources, and the two are otherwise different: Dead Zone is about running a compound and sending small squads out on missions.

Dead Zone does not have waves of zombies attacking your compound on a schedule. The danger lives on the missions, where infected can rush you from zone level 6 on.

Zombie films and games that only share the name

Dawn of the Dead is a reference from zombie cinema. It shares only the theme with Dead Zone, so it is a source of atmosphere, not of gameplay.

Careful with names. There is a series of games called The Last Stand, one called The Last Stand: Union City and other titles called simply Dead Zone from other studios, and some are phone apps. They are separate games with their own rules, and we claim no relationship with them. This page is about the browser edition from FB Games.

Where The Last Stand: Dead Zone fits

The things you can check in Dead Zone are these. It runs in the browser, for free, with no Flash and nothing to install, using a separate account. A tutorial of 34 steps takes you from your first building to your first mission. Five survivor roles (Fighter, Recon, Engineer, Scavenger and Medic), 135 weapons you can actually obtain and 47 types of zone across 41 neighbourhoods give the progression its depth. There is chat with other players from the start, and neighbours you can visit and help.

What it does not have yet: alliances, fights between players, trading between players or open-world exploration. It is in beta, the game is in English only, and the interface is designed for a computer.

How to choose, and a zombie game from the same site

If you want to manage a shelter and send squads out, Dead Zone and State of Decay-style games are the closest in spirit. If you want open-world exploration, look at Project Zomboid. If you want strategic defence against hordes, look at They Are Billions. If you want something that opens in a tab, with no download, Dead Zone is the one to try.

FB Games has another zombie title if you want a different approach: Zombie Lane, a farming and survival game in which you defend your home from zombies, grow crops, build and help your neighbours. It is a different game with its own account.

You play in your browser, with no Flash and no downloads, on a computer and, depending on the game, on your phone too.

Frequently asked questions about games like The Last Stand: Dead Zone

What are good games like The Last Stand: Dead Zone?

It depends on which part you liked. For community and base management in a zombie setting, look at State of Decay-style games. For open-world zombie survival, Project Zomboid. For real-time strategy against hordes, They Are Billions.

Is there a zombie game like Dead Zone that runs in the browser?

The Last Stand: Dead Zone itself does: it is free, needs no Flash and has nothing to install. FB Games also offers Zombie Lane, a farming and survival game with zombies.

What genre is The Last Stand: Dead Zone?

Zombie survival with base management: you run a compound and play real-time scavenging missions with a team of survivors. It is not open-world and not a first-person shooter.

Is Dead Zone an open-world game?

No. You choose a place on the city map and play a self-contained mission scene with a 7-minute clock, then return to your compound.

Does it have multiplayer?

It has chat, neighbours you can visit and help speed up a construction, and from level 15 an arena with a weekly ranking. There are no alliances and no fights between players yet.

Is it a tower defence or horde game?

No. Your compound is not attacked on a schedule. The fighting happens on the missions, where you move a team, shoot the infected and search for loot.

Is it the same as The Last Stand or The Last Stand: Union City?

No. Those are separate games with similar names and their own rules. This is the browser edition of The Last Stand: Dead Zone from FB Games.

Is it similar to the Dead Zone apps on phones?

Not necessarily. Several games and apps share the name Dead Zone, and they come from other studios. This edition has no app and is played in the browser.

How hard is it for a beginner?

A 34-step tutorial teaches you to build, receive your first survivor and run a mission. After that you progress at your own pace, because many jobs run on timers measured in minutes, hours or days.

Is it free to try?

Yes. Playing is free, with an account of your own, and donations are voluntary and optional.

Brand notice: The Last Stand: Dead Zone is an original game by Con Artist Games and is in beta here. This is a browser edition: FB Games is an independent project and is not the official Con Artist Games site.
